San Carlos de la Cabana is the 18th-century fortress, originally a prison and place of execution for political prisoners but now a museum of military history and market place were locals sell tourist souvenirs. Open from 10.00 - 22.00 daily includng a cannon-firing ceremony at 21.00. Looking out onto the Old Havana (Habana Vieja) side of the harbour and the stretch of waterfront known as the Malecon. This fortress is the second oldest in the Americas, built in 1577.
