The kilometre-long Paseo was built in 1772 and modelled on the Prado in Madrid. It is probably the most picturessque boulevard of its type in the Americas. A statue of Jose Marti (1853 - 1895), by Cuban sculptor Juan Vallalta de Saavedra, stands in Parque Central at the south end of the Prado.
