The early Celts were in awe of this place of hot bubbling marshes and the red rocks caused by iron oxide deposits. They dedicated it to their god Sulis. The Romans arriving in 43 A.D. were similarly inspired and with great diplomacy combined Sulis with their own Goddess of Wisdem and Healing, Minerva. Using their skill and engineering ingenuity, they built a beautiful town called 'Aquae Sulis', which became one of the great medicinal spas of the Roman world.
