King's Bath to the right was built in the 12th century. Although still important in medieval times as an ecclesiastical and textile centre, Bath was small, cramped, lacking in sanitation and social facilities. The Baths became dirty, bawdy places with noisy spectators, who often threw one another in, plus any stray animal.
